How much does a website cost?
What determines the price of a website, which ongoing costs to expect and how to compare quotes fairly.
The honest answer: it depends. That sounds like a cop-out, but it isn’t. A website can be a single business-card page or a shop with thousands of products. To help you figure out where your project sits, here’s what actually drives the price.
The five biggest cost factors
1. Scope and structure
How many pages does your website need, and how different are they? Ten pages with the same layout take less work than five pages that each need their own layout and features.
2. Design
An adapted theme is quicker to implement than a fully custom design. But then your site also looks like many others. A custom design needs more time for concept, drafts and feedback rounds.
3. Features
Contact form, appointment booking, multiple languages, members’ area, shop, integrations with other systems: every feature means planning, building and testing. This is often where two seemingly similar projects differ the most.
4. Content
Texts, photos, graphics: are you supplying them, or should they be created? Good content is the most underestimated part of a website, both in effort and in impact.
5. Tech and performance
Fast load times, clean tech for search engines and accessibility don’t happen by themselves. But they decide whether visitors stay and whether Google ranks your site well.
Don’t forget the ongoing costs
A website isn’t “finished” at launch. Plan for:
- Hosting and domain: storage, servers and your address on the web
- Maintenance: updates, backups and security
- Changes: new content, adjustments, small extensions
- Marketing (optional): ads, tracking and optimisation so the site actually gets found
How to compare quotes fairly
Two quotes with different prices often describe different services too. Check:
- Is it clear what’s included and what isn’t?
- Are design and tech custom-built, or is everything based on a template?
- Who takes care of updates and problems after launch?
- Do you own the content and access at the end?
- Is there a design up front, so you know what you’re getting?
